Iraq
I have been doing some thinking on the War in Iraq. Regardless if you were for the war or against the war back in March 2003, I think we now have the moral obligation to remain in Iraq and complete the task that was started. The war may or may not have been justified, John-Paul II condemned it, and I don't know what I personally think about it, however, it would be a terrible moral mistake to simply abandon the Iraqi people after we completely dismantled their government and way of life. These calls to abandon Iraq and bring the military home are terrible calls to be making, as this will only cause more strife to the Iraqi people and in the long run hurt America after the terrorists announce that they were right all a long and the rest of the Muslim world agrees with them.
I do believe, however, that America is making a mistake by not appealing for World Assistance at this point. It is in not only America's best interest that Iraq succeeds, but in the world's best interest. At this point, what your stance on the war was is irrelevant. It was for purposes like this that the UN was formed, I say make them do what they should actually be doing, instead of having them force abortions in other parts of the world.
Basically, I have been thinking about this because of the protests of Cindy Sheehan. I see many signs and more talk of just pulling our troops out, which would be a disastrous mistake. Every time America starts something and doesn't finish it, it always turns out for the worst.
I also think this rhetoric of attacking other people, Iran and North Korea, needs to stop. We don't have the resources to even contemplate that. If we want to attack Iran to protect Israel and Europe, let Israel and Europe handle the problem. If we want to protect Japan from North Korea, then let Japan handle it. If America wasn't so nuclear hungry, seeking a Star Wars defense program, and would have listened to John XXIII in 1960 when he called for world wide nuclear disarmament, we probably wouldn't have this problem today. We America as a sovereign state has the right to Nuclear weapons, then who are to say that Iran and North Korea as a sovereign state is not entitled to them? Yes, it is a bad idea for them to have them, but we can't tell them they can't have them, when we have a huge stock pile of them sitting here at home. Until someone comes into the world who is a visionary on disarmament, more and more rogue states are going to acquire this technology. Also, why aren't we telling Pakistan and India they can't have them? That is the part of the world where Nuclear War is most likely, and has been on the brink many times over the past few years.
As for the Jews in Israel in these settlements, I hate to say it, but I guess they know how the Palestinians felt when the Jews moved in and pushed them out. If they were truly interested in peace, and not in genocide against the Palestinian people, then there would be no problem in abandoning these settlements which have been used to attack the Palestinian people. Both sides are losers in this, and neither side can claim not to have blood on their hands, but they both need to get serious about peace. They should give Gaza and the West Bank back to the Palestinians, and declare Jerusalem to be some special zone where neither side claims the land. Jerusalem has been fought over for far to long, going back to the days of the Crusades, I think the place were Jesus Christ gave salvation to the world deserves a little peace and the only way to accomplish that is to declare it some sort of International Zone.
Just my thoughts on Military Situations throughout the world today...
