Italian Panel: Soviets behind Papal Assasination Attempt...
An Italian parliamentary commission concluded "beyond any reasonable doubt" that the Soviet Union was behind the 1981 attempt to kill Pope John Paul II, a theory long alleged but never proved, according to a draft report made available Thursday.

Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches
The Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church are scheduled to begin high level dialogue again to try to heal the 1000 year schism. The Holy Father is also expected to make a visit to Constantinople (Istanbul) sometime this year. Although the Patriarch of Constantinople asked that he visit on the Feast of Saint Andrew on November 30, the Turkish Government only specified sometime this year. This visit will be significant for a number of reasons. Benedict will be only the second Pope since the 8th Century to visit Constantinople (the last being Pope Paul VI). Also, it is significant because Pope Benedict, as Cardinal Ratzinger, opposed the entrance of Turkey into the European Union, which offended more then one person in Turkey. It will be interesting to see how this trip plays out...

What does Pat Robertson have in common with Iran?
They both believe that God is punishing Ariel Sharon. Of course they are on the opposite sides of the radical pole, but Pat can now say he agrees with the President of Iran on something. Robertson believes God is punishing Sharon for, God FORBID, trying to make peace in the Holy Land. He says God gave the land of Israel to the Jews, and the Prime Minister does not have the right to "carve it up". On the other side of the World of Radicalism, Ahmadinejad is praying for the death of Sharon. I do worry what the death of Sharon will mean to the Middle East. It seemed as though progress was being made, and the Holy Land seemed to have pilgrims returning to it this past Christmas. If a hardliner becomes Prime Minister, then the whole area could potentially blow up again. With the Palestinian Elections coming up at the end of the month, and now this, if hardliners win on both sides, then I doubt the Holy Land will have many pilgrims there for Holy Week...
Keep the Prime Minister, and the entire Middle East in your Prayers...

Here is a good article on why Priests need to be faithful, fatherly, strong, and healthy...
It also raises a good distinction between just discrimination (which is not even discrimination) and unjust discrimination.

Pope Joan
ABC News is doing a special on Pope Joan right now, so I figure this warrants a response.
1. It has always been mere speculation. All there the evidence they have is clues, there is no hard facts.
2. It would seem rather hard to me for someone to go through their ENTIRE life pretending to be another gender. I suppose there are always those people where you have to second guess yourself, but it would be pretty hard to fool EVERYONE.
3. There is the problem that during the times she is supposed to have reigned that another Pope was reigning. (Pope Benedict III, who signed documents during his reign when Pope Joan supposedly was Pope)
4. The Statues in Bernini’s Baldacchino would have come 700 years after Pope Joan. Hardly proof for the existence of Pope Joan. It said that they were faces of the Pope's niece, which is highly possibly because artists did these things. Just look at the Sistine Chapel where Michelangelo painted his own face and the face of a Cardinal on the walls.
5. There is the issue of this route the Pope would take from Saint Peter's to Saint John Lateran since like the 1100's. This route would not necessarily make sense however, since the Pope's lived at the Lateran until the end of the Avignon Papacy in the 14th Century. Unless the route was to take the Pope to and from Saint Peter's, but before the Pope moved to the Vatican there was no real reason for him to really be there. Afterall, even today, Saint John Lateran is the Cathedral of Rome and the Pope's, as Bishop of Rome, Cathedral.
6. There is no reason why Pope's may not have believed such a legend. This could explain some odd things, such as the chair. That chair they showed doesn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Pope Joan existed. It shows that at one time Pope's believed she may have existed, or that they were just highly paranoid. Even then, how does a chair prove gender? There seems to be an easier way to prove the gender of the Pope then some chair IMHO.
7. In the end, even if there was a Pope Joan she would not have been Pope. It would have been a lie and a fraud. For those of faith this is impossibile, and for those of reason it should seem ridiculous.
In conclusion, is this something that people need to really be worrying about? It seems to me that there are far more important things to worry about... It seem that ABC could spend there time on better issues.

Orthodox fighting over the Catholic Church
This has been an on going story, but in some ways it is rather amusing. Every religion has a sect that has gone off the deep end (for us it is the Sedevacantists and the 'Spirit of Vatican II' people). The Orthodox have these monks who are upset with the Orthodox Church's dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church. So, they were evicted from their Monastery, but they refuse to leave. Even the Greek Government is involved. I think it is for times like this that God gave us the Pope, this way we avoid the whole "You are the leader, but you are only the First Among Equals" so we are going to ignore you now. It is a rather interesting story to follow...

Christmas v. Consumerism
http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/column/index.php?ntid=65630&ntpid=4
At first I though this journalist was joking about the joy of Americans not being a smile or a act of kindness, but getting a $4000 Plasma TV. The more I read it, however, I don't think he was.
He seems to be criticizing the Pope for saying people need to realize that Christmas isn't about that $4000 Plasma TV, that true joy is not found there. True joy is found in acts of kindness, in being with friends and family, in going to Church, in doing the seemingly meaningless things for people. It are those things which will live in the memories of people, even beyond when that Plasma TV breaks and is thrown away. Joy can never be found in material things, because people always want new or better things. You do not fill fulfilled when you get a TV compared to when you do something nice for someone. This is the point I believe the Holy Father is getting at. Yes, getting gifts is nice, yes they bring happiness, but is that really Christmas is ALL about? Not only do I not think so, but I know not. I am not against giving gifts, but it must be taken in the proper perspective.
Why do we even give gifts on Christmas? Yes, I know the story of Saint Nicholas, yes I know the store of the Magi (who all were overjoyed to be able to give gifts, this act of kindness filled them with a lot of happiness), but they got the idea from someone else first. On Christmas day, God the Father gave a gift to this world, Jesus Christ. It was the ultimate gift anyone can receive. Christ came to make satisfaction for our sins, to make us adopted sons and daughters of God, to show us how we should live our lives, and to show us how to truly love (not in some weird meaning of the word) one another and God.
I can assure you that full joy will NEVER come on Christmas Day if it is only about receiving gifts. There will always be something left out, or something somebody could have done better. So long as you keep yourself focused on finite things of this world, you will never be satisfied. Only in the infinite God can we find satisfaction, and in looking for him, you will help serve one another. Only in this way can we be on the true path to joy, there is no other way.

US Spy Policy
Now, I am not necessarily the biggest fan of President Bush, but in comparison to what the competition was, he is far superior. I do not always agree with him, but I don't agree with most people on everything. That being said, there is a lot of news reports these days about his ordering of spying on American citizens. The news seems to be making a big deal out of it, and in my opinion, it is a big deal. I think that we have the 4th Amendment to the Constitution for a reason.
However, why isn't the fact that this unconstitutional spying on American citizens started under President Clinton? Clinton is the one who started this unprecedented spying, but everyone seems to forgot about that fact. It seems as though Clinton was allowed to do a lot of unconstitutional and illegal things.
At least be an equal oppurtunity basher, don't be a hypocrit.

New Apostolic Nuncio...
The New Apostolic Nuncio to the United States seems to have a very big interest in the Formation of Priests. This is something which the United States needs at this moment in time, with the formation in many seminaries less then adequate. This also helps the Pontifical College Josephinum because of its special tie to the Nuncio as its Ordinary (because of the Pontifical Status, it is not tied to any Diocese but is subject directly to the Holy See through the Apostolic Nuncio). I hope he takes a special interest there, as it is the Seminary I attend and Archbishop Montalvo never seemed to take much of an interest there.
The New Nuncio also has an interest in Catholic Higher Education, which is something this country needs help in as well. Many of the main Catholic Universities of this country are full of heresies and less then orthodox professors.
He is also a man of peace as he helped negotiate at the Basilica of the Nativity when Palestinians stormed the Basilica to avoid capture by the Israeli Police. I believe it lasted more then a month. This is a man the United States needs. He criticized and praised the Israelis when they deserved it, and he likewise did the same thing for the Palestinians. He seems to be a man of truth, and will tell it how it is no matter who you are. Something which will benefit the United States.
He seems, from my early perspective, to be the perfect fit for this country. He will help in areas of the Church that are lacking here, and he will help our country is areas that are lacking. I am impressed with the choice. I am glad that Pope Benedict is finally moving on American appointments, for a few months there was nothing. It appears the flood gates of appointments have been opened up on the United States. Hopefully a Bishop for Youngstown will be named soon.

A break with Mother Church
In language unheard of since the close of the Second Vatican Council, The Most Reverend Lord Raymond Burke, Archbishop of Saint Louis, suppressed the Parish of Saint Stanislaus Kostka, and affirmed the automatic excommunication of the Board of Directors and the Priest they hired on the account of the crime of Schism.
On one hand it is nice to know that a Bishop is willing to stand up against those who defiantly go against the Church.
On the other hand, it is sad that some members of this former parish would go so far as to break visible communion with the Church of Rome.
Pray for everyone involved that they might be reconciled to Our Lord and the Church, and pray for the Archbishop of Saint Louis as he valiantly defends the Church.

Ireland
BBC NEWS | UK | Northern Ireland | IRA says armed campaign is over
So, the IRA has put down its weapons again. Hopefully this helps move the peace process in Ireland along. Hopefully one day there will be one fully united Ireland, instead of most free and part occupied. Although this is just the begining of problems for Ireland.
The Church needs to be more pro-active in re-evangelizing the nation. They need another Saint Patrick, with the same faith and zeal. All it takes is one Bishop to ignite them all.
The Irish Church helped save Western Civilization at one time. Such a legacy should not be forgotten in Ireland.

The Vatican v. Isreal
Seattle Post-Intelligencer: AP - Middle East
It seems as though the State of Isreal is in a diplomatic war with The Holy See. I think Isreal's reaction is a bit over done. What has Isreal done for the Church? When has she apologized for her discimination of Christians? When has she apologized for the fighting going on in the Holy Land which has scared Christian Pilgrims away?
Everyone seems to always want the Church to apologize to them, but are not willing to apologize to the Church for their wrongs against her.
You will never please everyone...

Priests for Life Respond
I found on my hosts site, Dei Gratia, posted a statement from Fr. Pavone in response to Francis Kissling. Here is that statement:
New York City- Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today in response to a press release from Catholics for a Free Choice."The agenda of Catholics for a Free Choice is an agenda of confusion. Once again, Frances Kissling has asserted that Catholics don't have to adhere to Catholic teaching.
"Our response is simple. Nobody is forced to be a Catholic, but if you don't subscribe to Catholic teaching, have the honesty and integrity to say that you are no longer Catholic. But don't try to have it both ways. That's a game children play, not adults.
"Because Kissling has played this game for many years, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has had to publicly state more than once that Catholics for a Free Choice is not a Catholic organization and does not in any way represent the Church."
"Another problem with her press release is that it suggests that abortion can be justified. Here we don't even have to enter the question of Catholic Faith. We just have to read the descriptions of the procedure and look at the pictures. It is an act of killing. Neither a private citizen nor a Supreme Court nominee can justify this act of violence. Those who claim that killing children has any place under our Constitution, or in any civilized society, have more than a problem with Catholic Faith. They have a problem with fundamental human rights," said Fr. Pavone. Priests for Life

The Supreme Court
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,162780,00.html
I have to be honest; I am a bit nervous about this whole issue. I am worried that Bush will put up Gonzalez, or someone else who is not Pro-Life. The Democrats and pro-deathers push the idea that replacing O'Conner will tip the balance of the court, when in fact, it will not. Partial Birth Abortion will become illegal, but overall, Roe v. Wade will be kept in tact. This is because Clinton replaced a pro-life Justice with either Ginsburg or Breyer, I forget which one. So, the actual vote to uphold Roe v. Wade with O'Conner is 6-3, not 5-4. Kennedy believes in upholding Roe v. Wade, but does not believe in Partial Birth Abortion, that is where these 5-4 PBA votes come in. To replace O'Conner with a pro-life Justice will just be giving back the pro-Lifers a seat which was originally theirs to begin with.
I personally would like to see Bush put a pro-life woman on the bench. If it is possible to find someone who is a little liberal (very unlikely Bush would do this), but firmly pro-life, that would be great. That would be a nice change of events, and keep the seat a woman. That would keep the bickering down a little, and show that there are pro-life women in the world. It would also give any future decision some legitimacy, as a woman would be in on the decision that "rolled back the rights of women".
I would also like to point out, that the Republicans have had no trouble confirming very liberal Justices, as was the case with Ginsburg. She was a lawyer for the ACLU for goodness sake, but yet was confirmed with 96 votes. So, why do the Democrats put Republican nominees through the ringer?
It seems to me that the only issue Democrats are worried about is Abortion. They dare to preach to pro-life people about not voting on one issue, but when it comes to legislation and court nominees, one issue rises above all the others. Abortion. I have heard very little about minority rights, the middle class, even gay rights. It is always abortion. Even from more liberal republican senators like Spector. It seems to me that some people's priorities are a little mixed up. Is the Supreme Court an insitution only concerned with upholding Roe v. Wade? Does entrance to it require on to swear on their life they will uphold Roe v. Wade?
Alberto Gonzalez is pro-choice. If he is nominated, even with his beliefs on torture and countless other super conservative beliefs, I will love to see how the Democrats treat him. Will he be in the mainstream just because of his views on abortion, and thus confirmed without question? Will the Democrats just be thankful they got a pro-choice candidate? Is abortion the number one value in America or something?
Everyone says they want a mainstream Justice, but here is my opinion. Give the seat back to the pro-lifers. I have seen these surveys where it is claimed 60% of the nation wants Roe v Wade upheld. Ok, so you can still put a pro-life justice up and still be in the mainstream. Currently the Court is about 70% pro-death, but if they put up a pro-life justice, this brings the court much more in line with mainstream American, with about 60% of the Court being pro-death, and about 40% being pro-life.
Anyway, Bush worries me with his choice. This is the great pro-life test for Bush. (as well as a test for the Democrats) This will show exactly how committed he is to the pro-life movement. This post is not an approval of the Republican Party, I am very interested in seeing if they will be sell outs. So, the question everyone in America is asking, who will it be? The nation and the world are watching, so will we be civilized, or will we fit the description of an American in international circles? The answer to these questions and more will be answered in the next episode of... America...

The Elderly and the Disabled
A T-ball coach seeking to keep a player with a mental disability off the field allegedly asked another player to hurt the boy, state police said Friday.
http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/4728564/detail.html
Is this what our nation is coming to?
This country does not value the elderly or the mentally challenged. In fact, for the elderly, we seek to mercifully kill them through Euthanasia. For the mentally challenged, mothers are now urged to abort them, before they could become a burden on society. These people seek to establish a perfect human race.
This whole theory of a perfect human race is not new, however. Hitler also tried to found a perfect race by the destruction of millions of human lives. We all know that this was not a good thing, and in fact resulted in the Second World War. However, this new evil is very much socially accepted around the world. People wish to complain about human rights and human dignity in order to marry, but when it comes to this, they are silent. They say by killing them, they are doing them a favor. This society has become a very selfish society, a society where the ME and the I rules.
People do not care about their neighbors anymore. If I am inconvenienced by something, then it must be taken care of so that it doesn't bother me anymore. This coach was only thinking of himself, and the win. This child stood in the way of that, and invaded his comfort zone, so he sought to find a solution to his problem. Let alone it was a Tee-Ball game. Youth sports used to be about giving kids the chance to have fun, to give them something to do. Now all you hear about is murders, fights, etc in relation to youth sports. This is a selfish society, where true human dignity and equality are far from respected.
When people are really ready to discuss human rights and dignity, then we need to first stop viewing men as objects. Until then, people will never fully understand human rights and basic human dignity.
Stories like this really get to me...

Report: Pope drafting first Encyclical
Vatican, Jul. 14 (CWNews.com) - Informed sources at the Vatican have confirmed that Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) is writing his first encyclical during his summer vacation in the Italian Alps.Avvenire , the daily newspaper owned by the Italian bishops' conference, reports that the Pontiff has been working on a draft of the encyclical for several weeks, and plans to complete it during his stay at Les Combes.
The Vatican press office has not commented on the reports, but has said that during his vacation the Pope hoped to spend a good deal of free time reading and writing. The Holy Father brought several boxes of books with him to the isolated chalet in the Valle d'Aosta region where he will be staying for the next two weeks.
There has been no indication of the topic for the encyclical.
